When it’s a cold winter’s day, you depend on your furnace to keep your home toasty warm. So, there’s nothing worse than discovering cold air coming from your vents. There are several potential causes for this issue. Here are some common culprits.

Your Thermostat Fan is Set to “On”

Head over to your thermostat. Does it say your fan is on? When the fan setting is on, that keeps the fan running continuously, even when the furnace isn’t heating up air. If your fan setting is set to on, change it to the auto option. When you switch your setting to auto, it will only circulate the air when the furnace is heating the air.

The Furnace Control Panel is Broken

Sometimes your system’s electronic control panel is on the fritz. It may be an easy fix. Try turning off the furnace at its ON/OFF switch. Wait a few minutes, then turn the switch back on to see if warm air returns.

Your Air Ducts are Leaking

Your air duct system sends air to your vents. If there are any holes or gaps in the ducts, warm air might be leaking out before it can heat up your room. We can help you pinpoint the location of the leak and fix it.

You Have a Dirty Oil or Gas Burner

Have you been keeping your furnace burner clean? If not, there could be built up dust or gunk preventing proper ignition. We can come and clean it up, so it works like new.

The Air Filter Needs to Be Changed

Are you changing out your air filter frequently? If your answer is no, a clogged filter could be the problem. A dirty filter blocks air from flowing, causing your furnace to overheat. When your furnace gets too hot, it stops heat cycles to cool down.

Try changing your filter and let your furnace cool down, then restart the furnace to see if this remedies the situation. If not, you might need a technician to reset your furnace’s limit switch.

We hope one of these solutions fixes your furnace issue, however there could be many other causes for this problem. Please get in touch with us, and we would be glad to come and diagnose any issues and provide the right fix!
